About Michael
I'm Arlen, a finance professional from the United States with extensive professional and academic experiences abroad. My long-term career goal is to be an executive at an international financial services company, or to start my own investment firm that specializes in investing in and operating companies doing business in frontier and emerging markets. Since graduating from Northeastern University with a bachelor's degree in finance, I have completed a master's degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University as a Schwarzman Scholar, and I have worked as an investment banker at an American bulge bracket firm in New York City and an international boutique in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia as part of the Princeton in Asia Fellowship program. I'm originally from Maryland, near Washington, D.C., and I have also lived in Boston, Beijing, New York City, and Ulaanbaatar. Why do I coach?
I coach because I enjoy meeting new people and leveraging my own experiences to help others succeed. As an undergraduate, I worked at my university's writing center, where I frequently helped fellow students with applications for various opportunities. I saw firsthand how impactful an extra set of eyes and talking through application strategy could be for some people, and I have been helping people with their applications in various capacities ever since. Often, application processes can feel like opaque, black boxes that leave you frustrated and unsure of yourself, but with proper planning, advice, and support, application processes can help you learn a lot about yourself, your goals, and your dreams for the future. I really enjoy the satisfaction that comes from hitting submit on a well-done application after weeks or even months of hard work, and I am passionate about helping others experience that same feeling for whatever opportunity they're interested in, and hopefully making the hard work a bit more manageable!
